Canada’s Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, has announced the creation of an open work-permit stream for American H-1B visa holders, allowing them to work in Canada.
The program will also extend study or work permits to family members of H-1B visa holders. The initiative aims to attract thousands of workers in high-tech fields who are currently employed by companies with operations in both Canada and the US.
Starting from July 16, 2023, H-1B visa holders and their immediate family members will be eligible to apply for work permits in Canada. Approved applicants will receive open work permits valid for up to three years, allowing them to work for any employer in Canada. Spouses and dependents will also have the opportunity to apply for temporary resident visas with work or study permits.
Additionally, the Canadian government plans to develop an immigration stream later this year, targeting highly skilled individuals in the tech industry, regardless of whether they have a job offer or not. Details regarding the eligibility criteria and the number of people admitted to this stream have not yet been provided.
The H-1B visa program allows foreign nationals to work temporarily in the US, primarily in specialized occupations, including the technology sector. However, due to layoffs in the tech industry, many H-1B visa holders have been seeking alternative employment opportunities.
