The PTE Writing section can seem intimidating — but with the right structure, practice, and smart techniques, achieving a 79+ score is absolutely possible.
What Is the PTE Writing Section?
The PTE Writing section is part of the Speaking & Writingmodule. It evaluates your ability to communicate ideas clearly and correctly in written English.
You’ll be tested on two main tasks
1. Summarize Written Text (SWT)
You’ll read a passage and write a one-sentence summary that captures the main idea.
Your answer must be between 5 and 75 words.
2. Essay Writing
You’ll write a 200–300 word argumentative essay on a given topic.
Your essay should be well-structured, logical, and free from grammatical errors.
PTE Written Text Structure :
Step-by-Step Structure
Step 1 : Read the passage carefully (1–2 minutes)
- Identify the main idea and supporting points.
Ignore examples, data, or extra explanations.
Step 2: Combine ideas logically
- Join 2–3 key points into one complex sentence.
Use connectors like:
Although, However, Moreover, Therefore, Consequently, In addition
Step 3: Check your sentence :
- Keep it between 35–45 words for clarity.
- Ensure one full stop at the end.
- No bullet points, new lines, or extra punctuation
Scoring Criteria
You’re assessed on :
Content : How well you cover the topic.
Grammar : Accuracy and range of sentence types.
Vocabulary : Variety and word choice.
Coherence : Logical flow and connection between ideas.
Spelling and Written Discourse : Organization, punctuation, and consistency.
PTE Writing Tips for a High Score :
1. Understand the Task Requirements :
Before writing, carefully read the question or passage.
Make sure your response answers exactly what’s asked. Writing off-topic or missing keywords can cost valuable points.
2. Focus on Sentence Structure and Grammar :
Use complex sentences— but keep them clear and correct. Combine ideas using conjunctions like although, however, therefore, and moreover.
Avoid overly long or confusing sentences.
3.Paraphrase Effectively :
Paraphrasing shows your language flexibility. Instead of copying words from the passage, use synonyms and change sentence structure while keeping the same meaning.
4. Manage Your Time Wisely :
Good time management can make or break your writing score.
Suggested timing
Summarize Written Text : 10 minutes
Essay Writing : 20 minutes
Spend the last 1–2 minutes reviewing your work for grammar and spelling mistakes.
5.Practice Daily :
Consistent PTE writing practice helps you build confidence and speed.
Write short summaries of news articles.
Practice essays on trending topics.

Common PTE Writing Mistakes to Avoid
- Even strong writers can lose marks for simple errors. Be mindful of these
- Writing too much (over 350 words doesn’t mean higher marks)
Using repetitive vocabulary - Ignoring punctuation or capitalization
- Poor paragraph organization
- Forgetting to proofread for typos or grammar issues
Tip : Always read your answer once before submitting — it can help you catch small but costly mistakes.
