PTE Core (Pearson Test of English Core) is a computer-based English language test designed to assess everyday English communication skills.
The test assesses four communicative skills :-
PTE Core is scored on a scale from 10 to 90, with individual scores provided for the four communicative skills. Pearson also provides a personalized Score Report and Skills Profile.
For candidates using PTE Core for Canadian immigration, individual skill scores are important because IRCC uses Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) to determine language levels. Your overall PTE Core score is not converted into a single CLB level.
Yes. IRCC currently accepts PTE Core as an approved English-language test for Express Entry.
For Express Entry, IRCC lists :-
Candidates must take the appropriate approved test version. For PTE, that means PTE Core.
The language score you need depends on the immigration program you are applying under.
For example, IRCC currently lists :-
For NOC TEER 0 or 1:
For NOC TEER 2 or 3:
The minimum first official language requirement is currently:
The minimum English requirement is currently:
and
Important : Your required score depends on your immigration pathway and circumstances. Always check the latest IRCC requirements for your specific application.
PTE Core is divided into three sections :-
| Section | Approx. Duration | Skills |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking & Writing | 50–65 minutes | Speaking + Writing |
| Reading | 27–37 minutes | Reading |
| Listening | 22–37 minutes | Listening |
Pearson currently lists 7 question types in Speaking & Writing, 5 in Reading and 7 in Listening.
The Speaking & Writing section assesses your ability to communicate clearly in spoken and written English. It includes tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Respond to a Situation, Answer Short Question, Summarize Written Text, and Write Email.
These tasks test different skills, including pronunciation, oral fluency, listening ability, grammar, vocabulary, and your ability to organize and communicate information effectively.
The Reading section evaluates your ability to understand and interpret written English. The section includes Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice – Multiple Answers, Reorder Paragraph, Fill in the Blanks, and Multiple Choice – Single Answer.
These tasks assess areas such as reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, understanding context, and the ability to identify and organize information accurately.
The Listening section includes different tasks designed to assess your ability to understand spoken English and respond accurately.
Good preparation requires more than simply knowing the question types. You also need to understand how responses are scored and where partial credit may apply.
Understanding the PTE Core to CLB conversion is important if you are preparing for Canadian immigration.
IRCC currently publishes the following PTE Core equivalencies :-
| CLB Level | Speaking | Listening | Reading | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 10+ | 89+ | 89+ | 88+ | 90+ |
| CLB 9 | 84–88 | 82–88 | 78–87 | 88–89 |
| CLB 8 | 76–83 | 71–81 | 69–77 | 79–87 |
| CLB 7 | 68–75 | 60–70 | 60–68 | 69–78 |

| CLB 4 | 42–50 | 28–38 | 33–41 | 41–50 |
Why individual scores matter
One common mistake is to look only at the overall PTE Core score.
For Canadian immigration purposes, individual skill scores matter. For example, a candidate targeting CLB 9 needs to meet the applicable PTE Core range in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, rather than simply reaching a particular overall score.
Every learner starts at a different level.
Instead of using the same preparation strategy for everyone, your preparation should begin by understanding :-
Your current level → Your required CLB → Your skill gaps → Your preparation plan
