Choosing the right English test is one of the most important steps for anyone applying for Canada PR.
Since IRCC’s approval of PTE Core in 2024 alongside CELPIP—both fully computer-based and CLB-aligned—thousands of candidates face confusion over which suits their strengths, timelines, and preparation style best. This guide breaks down exam formats, scoring, ideal candidates, difficulty levels, and key FAQs to help you decide confidently.
Understanding the exam format is the first step in choosing the right test for your Canada PR journey. Below is a side-by-side breakdown of how each test is structured.
| Feature | PTE Core | CELPIP |
|---|---|---|
| Accepted For | Express Entry, PNP, Citizenship | Express Entry, PNP, Citizenship |

| Total Duration | Approximately 2 hours | Approximately 3 hours |
| Scoring Scale | 10–90 (per skill) | 1–12 (per skill) |
| CLB Conversion | Score range mapped to CLB | Direct conversion (CELPIP 9 = CLB 9) |
| Scoring Method | Fully AI-scored | Computer-delivered, AI + human-reviewed |
| Result Time | Approximately 48 hours | 4–5 business days (faster with Express Rating) |
| Accent Exposure | International/Global English | Canadian English |
| Speaking Format | Structured, short responses using a microphone | Longer, spontaneous responses (60–90 seconds) using a microphone |
| Validity | 2 years | 2 years |
PTE Core runs in three main sections and takes about two hours in total.
Beacuse everything is AI-scored, PTE Core feels fast-paced – audio plays at natural speed, and tasks like Repeat Sentence and Write From Dictation reward reaction time over long, reflective answers.
CELPIP-General takes about about three hours and is split into four clarly separate ssection, always in this order : Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking.
The speaking section is one of the biggest differences between PTE Core and CELPIP.
PTE Core Speaking :-
PTE Core uses structured speaking tasks. You speak into a microphone and respond according to the instructions for each task.
Tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image and Respond to a Situation require you to produce your response within a specific time.
This format can suit candidates who prefer structured questions and shorter responses.
CELPIP Speaking :-
CELPIP Speaking includes several everyday communication situations.
You may need to give advice, describe experiences, make comparisons, persuade someone or express your opinion.
Some responses require you to speak for a longer period, so candidates should be comfortable developing their ideas quickly.
In simple terms : PTE Core generally uses more structured speaking tasks, while CELPIP places more emphasis on responding to practical, everyday situations.
PTE Core scores each skill (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing) on a scale from 10 to 90. IRCC then converts these scores into CLB levels using an official equivalency table. PTE Core scores are converted to CLB by individual skill, not by overall average, which means your CLB level for eligibility purposes is based on your weakest skill, not your average score.
Approximate PTE Core score ranges for common CLB targets :-
| CLB Level | Speaking | Writing | Reading | Listening |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 5 | 51 | 51 | 42 | 39 |
| CLB 7 | 68 | 69 | 60 | 60 |
| CLB 8 | 76 | 79 | 69 | 71 |
| CLB 9 | 84 | 88 | 78 | 82 |
These are approximate planning figures based on published equivalency charts — always verify against the latest official IRCC table before booking your test.
CELPIP’s biggest advantage is its simplicity : your CELPIP score IS your CLB level – no conversion needed.
Each of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) gets its own separate score from 1-12, and each one converts straight to the matching CLB level.
Important : Your Skills Are Scored Separately — Not Averaged
This is the part many candidates misunderstand. IRCC does not average your four scores together. Each skill must individually meet the required CLB level.
Example : A candidate needs CLB 7 in all four skills for Express Entry
| Skill | CELPIP Score | CLB Level | Meets CLB 7 Requirement? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 9 | CLB 9 | ✅ Yes |
| Reading | 8 | CLB 8 | ✅ Yes |
| Writing | 8 | CLB 8 | ✅ Yes |
| Speaking | 6 | CLB 6 | ❌ No |
Result : This candidate does NOT meet the CLB 7 requirement — even though 3 out of 4 skills are above CLB 7, and even though the average (9+8+8+6)/4 = 7.75 looks like a pass.
One weak skill (Speaking, at CLB 6) brings the whole application below the required threshold, regardless of how strong the other three scores are.
There is no official rule saying that one test is easier for everyone.
The better choice can depend on your English skills, preparation style and comfort with the test format.
PTE Core may suit candidates who :
CELPIP may suit candidates who :
Instead of asking “Which test is easier?”, consider asking:
Which test format matches my strengths?
Time is another difference between the two tests.
PTE Core
The complete test takes approximately 2 hours.
CELPIP-General
The complete test takes approximately 3 hours.
Therefore, candidates who prefer a shorter overall test experience may want to consider the difference in test duration when choosing between PTE Core and CELPIP.
Result timing can also be an important consideration.
PTE results are generally delivered quickly, although the exact timing can depend on the test and result-processing circumstances.
CELPIP also offers different result services, including options for faster results depending on the service selected.
If your immigration timeline is important, check the current official test-provider information before booking.
PTE Core vs CELPIP : Retake Considerations
If you do not achieve the score you need, you may consider taking the test again.
Before booking another test, identify which skill is preventing you from reaching your target CLB level.
For example :
The specific retake rules and waiting periods can change, so candidates should check the current official PTE or CELPIP rules before scheduling another test.
Both PTE Core and CELPIP-General are accepted English tests for Express Entry, subject to the requirements of the immigration program you are applying under.
Your required CLB level depends on your immigration program.
For example, under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the minimum language requirement is CLB 7 in all four abilities. IRCC also uses language ability as part of the Comprehensive Ranking System, so higher language levels can affect CRS points.
For the CRS, official language points are awarded separately for each ability. For applicants without a spouse or common-law partner, the maximum for the first official language is 136 points; with a spouse or common-law partner, it is 128.
This means your target score should be based on your specific immigration pathway and CRS goals, not simply on passing the English test.
There is no single test that is right for every candidate.
Consider these factors before making your decision:
Choose PTE Core if you prefer :
Consider CELPIP if you prefer :
Before choosing, check :
Neither test automatically gives more CRS points simply because it is PTE Core or CELPIP.
For Express Entry, your language results are converted to the applicable CLB levels, and CRS language points depend on the CLB level you achieve in each ability.
For example, achieving CLB 9 or CLB 10 in the required abilities can provide more first-official-language CRS points than lower CLB levels.
Therefore, focus on the test in which you can realistically achieve the CLB level required for your immigration plan.
PTE Core is easier if you are good at typing and structured answers, while CELPIP is easier for natural speaking.
Both tests give the same PR points if you score high; no test is inherently better.
Canada PR uses CLB levels, not a pass/fail score. For maximum points (CLB 9 or above):
PTE Core: 76–90
CELPIP: 9–12
Both PTE Core and CELPIP are accepted for Express Entry and other immigration programs.
